The world beyond

"Libraries show me the world beyond my limited horizons."
Sarah Bracey White—Southern Writer and Artist

Dear Library User:

As a friend of the Jefferson County Library Cooperative (JCLC), you know better than most the role that the One County – One Library Card system plays in broadening the horizons of our own Jefferson County residents. It is the glue that binds our hometown libraries together. Through JCLC our members have access to an abundance of resources that they would not have if all 40 libraries were separate. You have been a supporter of our efforts to maintain this bond. Thank you! Because of you, JCLC is able to:

  • Provide members with access to over 2 million items—including printed books, downloadable audio-books and eBooks, DVDs and music.
  • Equip members with Internet access at 40 libraries.
  • Provide access to the Alabama Virtual Library and Homework Alabama.
  • Continue the Delivery Service guaranteeing members have access to all library materials.
  • Continue Books-by-Mail thus ensuring the disabled/homebound can access services.

As you may know, JCLC, like many county-funded projects, has been cut completely from the Jefferson County budget, and we do not expect to receive funds from the county in the near future. Although we receive funding from member libraries and the state, the county funding was crucial to our continuing to provide these services. We anticipated the funding cuts, though. In fact, in 2009, we began tightening our belt and also raising private source funds to help build a reserve to support our operating expenses. But the reserves will not last forever, and we are working diligently to transition from being a government-supported entity to a donor-supported organization. We are making great strides. We are developing an annual fund plan for the upcoming year, strengthening our relationships with individuals, foundations and corporations, and we are training our staff, library boards, and library friends groups to embrace this new culture of fundraising. We will be successful. But we cannot sustain and grow JCLC without YOU!

On behalf of JCLC, I respectfully request your continued support of our organization. Please consider giving to our summer 2012 “Keep It Alive” campaign.

For more information about the “Keep It Alive,” go to http://www.jclc.org/advocacy/whydonation.aspx. Thank you again for all that you do. Together we will provide better, more efficient library services for all county residents. Please contact me directly if you have any questions. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Patricia Ryan
